She wouldn’t, but that’s why this scene is so goddamn ridiculous. It looks “cute” because Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards shirt him riding a dragon was always going to work. They wrote that line already knowing that Jon would in fact ride a dragon, so it comes off in hindsight like good-natured teasing and not like Dany is being cavalier with Jon’s life. The thing is though that Dany wouldn’t be so cavalier with Jon’s life. She doesn’t know his attempt to ride Rhaegal will work, even if the show’s writers do. Nor does Jon. And as far as both of them know, it shouldn’t work, because the prevailing wisdom something the writers seem to treat as objective fact on the show even if it’s dubious in the books is that only Targaryens can ride dragons. Dany has absolutely no reason at all to think Jon is a
Targaryen nd neither does he Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards shirt meaning, she should also have no reason at all to think he’d be able to ride one of the dragons. And again, the absolutists here only Targaryens can ride dragons! are the goddamn writers themselves. Dany would not expect Jon to succeed in riding a dragon, and failing to ride a dragon usually means you end up with burn scars or, uh, dead. There’s no reason for her to encourage him to do something that in-story she would have no expectation of him actually doing, when the consequences for failure are so severe. It’s just dumb. Not only that, but when he does actually succeed, there’s no expressed shock at him doing it, nor do either of them use it as evidence to later accept Jon’s parentage. It happens in a vacuum, devoid of context or even overall plot significance. It’s just really, really horrendous writing.
