Prior to that, the spelling was all wily-nily, sometimes it had an , sometimes not, sometimes only one “t”, sometimes all manner of extra letters and substitutions. Madness, I say. The furthest back I could trace the “Burnette” name was to John Burnet of Scotland, in 1293. And his father was named Robert Burnard, which I suppose was the origin of Burnette. I couldn’t get much further than him, though. They were Bessie Rogers Webster, and Walter Webster, born in 1891 and respectively. On both of their branches in my family tree, I ended up in Germany, as far back as I could go, except for one line that goes all the way back to, and past, Joan Stewart, Queen of Scotland, born .Genealogy is fun and exciting. I’m really glad I do know my great-great grandparents’ names, because otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to get anywhere with just my great grandparents’ names- a lot of the resources I was able to find aren’t so good at finding people with living children.
